I am not a sociologist but there has got to be an official name for those of us who refuse to join-in. We/They are probably identified at a very young age by some social worker who writes "contrarian" or "disruptor" in their school record instead of "individualistic" or "entrepreneurial."
Ah yes it was your bit about not being a joiner of support groups made me smile - I struggle with that as well - went to one recently and - no it wasn’t me.
Partly it is to do with the perceived age thing you discuss in another post - they in the group all seem to have accepted they are old - I was clearly the odd person out with my dyed blonde hair and ear stud.
It’s also about not wanting to identify as a PWP - I HAVE the condition but the I am NOT the condition.
Excellent essay. Thoughts arising - Mindfulness has become one of those ‘thing’ words which separates it from some (as I recall) profound Buddhist thinking about the human attachment to ego sense desire and other matters of this world.
That said contrary to the Buddhist thinking I’m rather attached to judgements - they are what makes the delightful messed up creatures we all are. Being non-judgemental is a fine concept but blimey doesn’t make for great conversations.
I thought there was more I wanted to say but that seems to be it.
